John Markopoulos (1951–2004) was a Greek businessman. He was majority shareholder of Proton Bank. ==Life== With studies at the University of Thessalonica and graduate studies (MBA) at the INSEAD University in Fontainebleau, France he has worked as a financial analyst in Steyer Daimler Puch AG in Vienna and as a manager in Chase Manhattan Bank in London. In 1990, he founded Sigma Securities S.A. where he held the positions of Chairman and Managing Director until the year 2000 when the company was acquired by Piraeus Bank. Sigma Securities was the first private societe anonyme securities house in Greece. His tireless efforts, combined with his innovative ideas, soon led Sigma to the top position in the domestic market. Being a pioneer, John Markopoulos is the man who literally opened up the Greek capital markets to the international investors community, attracting significant inflows to the domestic capital market. The contribution of John Markopoulos to the internationalisation and development of the Greek capital markets is widely recognised and Sigma Securities received numerous international awards at the time. In 2001, he co-founded the Group of Companies of Proton Bank, a specialised financial services group engaging in the provision of investment and asset management services and succeed in a short period of time to establish the trademark of the new scheme in the domestic market.
